Wisteria

This trellis was built nearly 6 years ago, along with the planting of the wisteria. It took about 4 years for the wisteria to finally start budding. That first year it budded, it almost didn't because I almost ripped it out thinking it was defunct. Fortunately, my neighbor informed me these take awhile to take hold. Hopefully, it'll go nuts this spring because I'm getting tired of looking at that bare trellis.

Hey, glad to see someone else on houseblogs.net has wisteria too! :) What color is yours? Our, I hear, is white and I just spent an afternoon doing a hard prune because it was threatening the house and surrounding plants. Hopefully I didn't stress it too much but I hear they are very hardy and do better when pruned well. Good luck and keep posting picts!

  2. Rachel- I believe mine is purple, which seems fairly common. I often wondered if I should prune it. I wonder if it's too late?

From the research I've done, Wisteria can be pruned in the late winter before flowering and in the fall to tame the suckers that grow over the summer, but some especially rampant plants can be pruned as needed, taking off new growth down to 5 or 7 buds each time you pass by it (As we will have to do). The POs said that the vines was there when they moved in 20 years ago, but has flourished since they put up the pergola 5 years ago. It certainly loves to climb!
The Royal Horticultural Society has a great page on pruning Wisteria, if you are interested: http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0605/wisteria.asp

I am desperate for some wisteria to grow anywhere on my lane.

I'm told it's all around me but I just can't seem to see it.
